The capital of the Gyeonggi Province, Suwon is an ancient fortress city about 30 miles south of Seoul. The name “Suwon,” meaning “water source” or “field of water,” arose from its days of being renowned for its fine artesian wells.
Today Suwon is famous for its restored fortress walls, its galbi, Korean barbecued short ribs, and its luscious strawberries. The city is easily accessible by subway and train from Seoul. It was chosen as one of the ten Korean cities to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
