SEOUL, Seoul Municipality

Built in the late 14 th Century, Namdaemun is a fascinating and remarkable sight standing amidst tall, modern office buildings and bustling traffic.

It once served as Seoul’s chief city gate during the Joseon dynasty. The name means, “Great Wall to the South.”

Just east of the formidable gate is the Namdaemun Market, an open-air market whose history can be traced to the Joseon dynasty. Now it is Seoul’s wholesale center offering anything and everything: clothing, shoes, household goods, flowers, wigs, accessories, sporting goods, construction material, furniture, electronic appliances, gift items, etc.
