A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jongmyo Royal Ancestral Shrine was built during the Joseon dynasty to honor the spirits of Korea’s royal ancestors. Jongmyo is made up of two long, pillared buildings that enshrine ancestral tablets on which the names and achievements of the Joseon Kings and queens are recorded. The shrine was built according to Confucian requirements and rituals are carried out on the 1 st Sunday of May each year, also according to strict Confucian guidelines. |
