The Jogyesa Temple is the heart of Buddhism in South Korea. Unlike most Buddhist temples that are tucked away in the mountains away from the hectic commotion of city life, Jogyesa is located in the heart of Seoul.
On the night before Buddha’s birthday, marked by the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, Jogyesa comes alive with hundreds of lanterns lit by worshippers in search of good fortune for the upcoming year. Rows of flickering lanterns illuminate the temple courtyards and the air is thick with prayers for loved ones.
