The Gwangju National Museum was built to display Yuan dynasty artifacts and relics that were discovered in a 600 year old sunken Chinese ship. The ship had met misfortune in the Yellow Sea and was discovered in 1976.
Among the uncovered treasures are Yuan dynasty kilns from Hong Kong and 14 th century Luang Juan celadon vases and cups. The second floor of the museum houses Jeolla Province goods, 11 th-14 th century bronze Buddha bells, and Joseon dynasty scroll paintings.
