Joint Security Area

The Joint Security Area (JSA) is a special, 8,600 sq. foot/800 sq. meter area in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where unarmed representatives of both North and South meet regularly for meetings in a series of buildings constructed right across the actual Military Demarcation Line (MDL).

The main building in the middle of "conference row" is the Military Armistice Commission (MAC) building. This is the building that most tourists are permitted to enter, from either the north or the south. The MAC building is used daily at noon (except for Sundays and holidays) for meetings of the Joint Duty Officers (JDO) of both sides; for periodic meetings of the Security Officers of both sides to discuss problems or matters related to the two guard forces; and for meetings of the two sides Secretarys and for meetings of the Military Armistice Commission which consists of representatives of North Korea, China, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, and one member, on a rotating basis, of the remaining United Nations Command nations (Canada, Thailand and the Philippines.)
