Deoksugung Palace
SEOUL, Seoul Municipality
Deoksugung Palace is the one of the five royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. It was built in the mid-15 th century by King Sejong to be his grandson’s (Prince Wolsan) residence. The second-to-last king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Gojong, resided in Deoksugung after being forced to abdicate his throne by the Japanese and remained there until his death in 1919. The name “Deoksugung,” meaning “palace of virtuous longetivity,” was given to the palace by King Gojong’s son, Sunjong, who hoped that his father would live a long time in peace there. Deoksugung also contains the only Western-style building of all of the Korean palaces.
