One of the most famous temples in Korea, Haeinsa is located in the Gayasan National Park. It lies amidst the ethereal mist of Gayasan mountain, enveloped in the sound of prayer and delicate chanting. The air surrounding Haeinsa makes it seem utterly separated from civilization but is easily accessed by an hour-long bus ride from Daegu. The mountain and the temple are breathlessly stunning in autumn, when the leaves from the trees on the entire mountain burst with fiery red, orange, and yellow. Haeinsa is home to the Tripitaka Koreana, a collection of over 80,000 woodblocks engraved with Buddhist scriptures. The immense library was completed during the Goryeo dynasty in 1252 after 20 years of work but was destroyed by Mongols when they invaded Korea. King Gojong ordered a second set to be made as a plea to Buddha to intervene against the Mongols, who curiously departed in 1382 after the fall of their dynasty. Haeinsa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
