South Korea -> Andong -> Hahoe Village
Hahoe Village
Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-Do Province
One of the few places where modernity has not yet invaded, Hahoe is old Korea at its most authentic. The small village has maintained traditional, rustic rural life for the past 500 years.
In the Joseon dynasty, Hahoe was famous for its literati and military leaders, as well as mask dance performances called Byeolsingut Tallori.
Hahoe lies 30 minutes west of Andong and is surrounded by the Sobaek Mountains and cradled by the Nakdonggang River. Dirt paths lead to houses with cows roped in the front yard and doenjang (fermented bean paste) patties dry out in the sun. It is natural, raw, hearty, and beautiful.
