South Korea -> Andong -> Dosan Seowon Confucian Academy
Dosan Seowon Confucian Academy
Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-Do Province
Located 28 km north of Andong, the Dosan Seowon Confucian Academy was established in 1574 by Yi Hwang, a principal Confucian scholar and the Chief of Confucian Studies and Affairs. The name was given to the academy by King Seonjo in 1575 and is still honored by being depicted on the 1,000 won (the Korean currency) note.
Although Dosan Seowon is no longer used as a place to teach the wisdom of Confucius, the dignified scholarly air is apparent in the hallowed lecture halls and wooden printing plates. Traditional Confucian ceremonies and commemorations are still held there and Yi Hwang's descendants for the past 16 generations have called Dosan Seowon their home.
